PDF REDACTION GUIDES

Redact a handwritten signature from a PDF

Cover a visible signature in a PDF or scan, check the full pen strokes and export a separate sharing copy without altering your original.

By RedactPDFKit · Updated

For sharing a copy with a handwritten or scanned signature hidden. This is not a tool for clearing certificate signatures or re-signing a document.

Before you start

  • A source copy you will retain separately.
  • The signature location on each relevant page.
  • A decision about nearby names, initials and dates.

Try 10 pages with Google sign-in, or compare the monthly plans.

Identify what kind of signature you have

A handwritten signature may be part of a scanned page, an inserted picture or ordinary PDF page content. It can look the same in a viewer even though the underlying objects differ. For a sharing copy, a redaction area can cover its visible strokes.

A certificate-based digital signature is different: it validates a document, rather than just displaying handwriting. RedactPDFKit rebuilds the export as page images. That exported copy does not preserve the original digital-signature validation. Retain the signed source when the signature record matters.

Draw the box around all the pen strokes

Upload the file and open its review view. Automatic name detection is not a handwriting detector, so inspect the signature field yourself. Draw a manual box around the full mark, including long strokes that extend above, below or beyond the printed signature line.

Leave a small margin around the mark. Zoom in to check that no tip of a letter remains visible. If the box covers a nearby date or printed name you need to retain, adjust the boundary before exporting.

The signature is in a photo or screenshot? Choose an image output format.

Look for initials and repeat signatures

Check every signature field, initials beside changes, approval stamps and repeated footer marks. A single large signature box does not cover those other locations.

Read the nearby printed information too. If you are hiding the signer identity, a printed name, email address or job title may disclose it even after the handwriting is covered. Add those items to your list when they are part of the same sharing rule.

Printed names need to go too? Build a list of names and contact details.

Choose the appearance of the sharing copy

Black makes the removed area obvious. White can be easier to read on a plain white form. Both cover the selected area with a solid color; neither repairs a line or reconstructs text beneath the signature.

Use a different workflow if you need to edit a signature field or obtain another signature on a valid original. This export is for viewing the redacted copy, not for preserving an interactive signed form.

Inspect the result at a readable zoom

Run the export check and download the PDF. Inspect the whole masked boundary and the surrounding form. OCR text checks cannot reliably tell you whether a distinctive handwritten stroke was left behind.

Open the actual download instead of relying only on the preview. Keep the original signed document separate and name the exported file so the recipient can tell it is a redacted copy.

Common questions

Will automatic detection find handwriting?

Do not rely on it for signatures. Use manual areas and visually check the complete mark.

Can I remove the signature but keep its certificate valid?

This image-based export does not preserve the original digital-signature validation. Keep the signed original separately.

Can I hide a signature in a JPG?

Yes. Upload the supported image, cover the region and export an image or PDF sharing copy.
